poster making the markARTCUBE poised to take Malaysian contemporary art to the world stage”

Malaysia’s latest art gallery will focus on high-value, investment- grade contemporary art by critically-acclaimed Malaysian artists.

New gallery ARTCUBE is set to make its mark in the Malaysian art scene by revolutionising the way Malaysian art is presented to the global platform and turning it into a full-fledged industry within the nation. Located at uber stylish mall The Intermark, the ultra-modern and chic contemporary art gallery spans 3,000 square feet. “

Joint gallery directors Azhar Ahmad and Fuad Salleh who are art enthusiasts themselves believe that Malaysia already has a strong cast of highly conceptual artists whose technical and experimental abilities have set an international benchmark. Amongst them, who in recent times have received international acclaim – invited to participate in key global art events and are exhibited by major museums and collections – are Shooshie Sulaiman, the first South East Asian artist to be invited to the esteemed Documenta in Germany; Zulkifli Yusof who was invited to exhibit at the prestigious Venice Biennale and Suhaimi Fadzir who exhibited at the Dublin biennale and Hamir Soib’s who was commissioned by Louis Vuitton.”

“With the global shift towards a preference for art that not only possesses intellectual depth but also crucially involves great artistic skill, Malaysian contemporary art has all the ingredients to take its rightful place as one of the major art industries in the world” said Azhar, the more sales-inclined of the two ARTCUBE directors. “

The two also believe that the way to win over the multi-billion dollar global market is by raising the level of professionalism in which Malaysian art talents are managed. Lack of documentation is a serious issue amongst Malaysian artists and this is where ARTCUBE is able to create a unique position for itself. It will identify, represent and document the specific artists within our local movement, thus acting as a crucial link in Malaysia’s natural progression into a major cultural centre. “

This involves the monumental task of documenting the works which will pass through their gallery with expert photography as well as commissioning writings; firstly on specific artists to inform the public on their achievements, artistic practice and future directions; secondly on art movements within the industry, to help educate the public on genres such as installation or minimalism which might not achieve all the acclaim they deserve without proper information and; and thirdly on individual art

works, surmising the content and technical techniques, so as to enable the audience to fully appreciate the merit of art works and artists.”

The duo boldly demonstrate ARTCUBE’s capability through “Making the Mark”, a meticulously curated exhibition by seventeen established, mid-career and upcoming contemporary Malaysian artists to mark the opening of ARTCUBE. Mat Nor Mahmud’s expert handling of acrylic and sawdust on canvas – marrying highly granular textures with the softness of colours, Hamir Soib’s astonishing painterly skills, Azrin Mohd’s hand made assemblages, and Husin Hourmain’s calligraphic prowess are all proudly displayed. “

The gallery looks to showcase not only paintings and sculptures but also art works such as installations, large scale assemblage and experimental mixed media which are perhaps not ‘easy sells’ but are fundamental in context of the contemporary art movement.”

In addition it will also assist collectors in amassing artworks of significance and act as consultants to serious corporate and private collections of Malaysian art.”

ARTCUBE is located at Level 3 at The Intermark. “Making The Mark” will run until 31st Dec 2013. For enquiries, please contact the gallery at 03-21811787 or email at Azhar can be contacted at 019-3309984 and Fuad at 019-2421118. “
